Singapore Is-Land (The 3 Musketeers)

Other than Pulau Ubin that was mentioned in the previous post, I am now proud to share with you my experience on 3 other islands in Singapore.

Singapore Is-Land (Pulau Ubin)

A spot to get out of the city’s hustled and bustle. This is one of the fantastic options for you who want to experience the other side of Singapore, the traditional Kampong (Village) Spirit. A stroll through the island takes you back to Singapore in the 1960's with the simple pleasures of life. The air is fresh and you can experience the unique culture of "multi racial as a family". I took a boat there at Changi Village Pier. As I step onto the island, an unique contrast of it from the main island attracted me to walk deeper into it.

For me, I actually did what the locals do - Rent a bicycle. This is the most common way of transportation around the island. However, if you do not want to sweat so early, you may want to go on the local paid taxi.

Since young, I have heard from my parents that the Chinese Temple at Pulau Ubin answers to the prayers of the believers and is highly respected. This temple is designed as a traditional Chinese architecture and is definitely a place for you to understand the local Chinese culture.

As you are on the taxi to rding a bicyle, you will be able to see beautiful scenery at both sides. For example, this man lake created due to the mining activities here.

The most famous place in Pulau Ubin would the Chek Jawa wetland reserve. Going to this place will not be very save on bicycle so I would encourage you to hire a taxi. Remember get the driver phone number as the fee is usually calculated as a 2 way trip.

Chek Jawa is among the few places that left with a natural rocky shore, gravel beach and other interesting rock formations. It is located at the coastal and mangrove area of Pulau Ubin is a famous wetland nature reserve which often attracted visits by locals and tourist. It one of the handfuls of places left in Singapore to escape from the hectic city life.

Walking through the wooden bridge would allow you to see many wetland creatures, however, as it was high tide when we arrived there, we were not able to see many of them. (I highly encourage you to learn from our mistake and Check the tide before you leave for the reserve.)

After walking through the coastal and mangrove trail. Do not forget to walk through the forest trail where you can go up a 5 story high viewing tower and experience a breath taking view of the island and also the upper areas of the rainforest.

Before proceeding to the jetty to leave for the main island, do not forget to have a taste of the locally grown coconut juice. They are identified as the coconuts still attatched to the step and have not had their husk removed. It cooled my body down so much that i think i can go for another round of the island.

Below are some nature photos that we took there.

Can you see the snake?

Imagine how beautiful the tree is if it is low tide?

A plant taken on the island. Does this photo look professional?

TIPS:
1) Check the tide condition before you leave for the island, you would never want to leave without looking at the creatures.
2)Wear proper walking shoes and comfortable attire. You will be walking alot.
3)Bring along insect repellent as there are many mosquito there. I did get some bites after the trips. (But of course, it was worth it)

FOODIE's Haven - Singaporeans RECOMMENDATION

Elgin is right and like him, I do love Chili Crab. The Chili Crab is a 100% Singapore created dish. The crab is first deep fried in hot oil to lock the sweet juice in it. After that, it is stir fried with the special chili sauce with egg pieces.

As you sit on your table, you will be able to smell the dish as soon as it leaves the kitchen. As you peel the shell off the springy flesh, the mixture of the smell of fresh crabmeat and the sauce hits you straight into your face. The flesh of the crab has such great texture that begins jumping betweens your teeth as you chew on them, spraying its sweet juice into your throat. Have the flesh together with the sauce and you will feel that the sauce brings out the layered texture and flavor of the dish. Imagine Sweet, spicy, salty, springy, smooth all in one mouth.

This dish can be found at No Signboard Seafood (You can find it at the esplanade) or you may want to go to the Chinese restaurant at the Singapore flyer. If you prefer a spicier version, you may want to go for the latter and chili crab at No Signboard Seafood is a tat too sweet for me.

The gravy of the noodle is thick and rich and a little spicy. After your taste bud is fully engulfed by the coconut’s flavor, the sweetness of the shrimp will blast out and bounces off the wall of your mouth. The smooth noodle absorbs the essence of the gravy and as it slips into your mouth, the rice, coconut, chili and the shrimp forms a layered flavor, complemented by the smooth yet springy texture.

You may want to try the best at The Original Katong Laksa. It is the best I have tastes and it met all the criteria that I seek and each mouth comes with a blast of flavor.
